Dunlap: Kings Canyon Area
(About 1 hour east of Fresno)
Dunlap is a great site for thermal mountain flying and also has excellent camping facilities at the LZ.
Dunlap site has re-opened and offers a great chance for thermal flying on a large ridge on the western slope of the Sierras east of Fresno. This is an H3-H4 site but may have some considerations for H2’s similar to McClure or other sites. Contact club officers for more information (559)301-6356 or (559)285-7594. A lot is different at Dunlap than in the past so it is important to reach out to a local pilot for site intro.
Optimal wind conditions for hang gliders at 10-12 mph; maximum winds are 17 mph with gusts to 20 mph.
Conditions at Dunlap can be compared to other mountain flying sites in California including turbulent air increasing through midday. Newer or less experienced pilots should fly in the earlier hours to avoid rowdy conditions in summer and warm months. Lift can be abundent and brisk at times. There is a glass off condition that happens at times. Dunlap also has some options for cross country from the site. For more detailed explanation, use link below to reach the CCHPC website. Becoming a member and completing the waiver is required prior to flying.
***Verizon cell service works well here. Other services appear to work also, except maybe google options. Wifi is available near dome visitor center***

What to bring:
$ to pay for camping on site, and possible ride to launch
Tent or place to sleep unless renting a yurt

Some tips for the site:
100% definitely get a site intro from someone who is familiar with this site
The LZ is long and spacious but you can experience cross wind at times
Launching from both the hill and the ramp can require a strong run. This isn’t the site to go easy on your launch run. Get up to speed ASAP
If wind is north-y be careful launching near the big tree on the hill. It can be blocking the wind until you get off of launch. If north-y, think about launching from the ramp
